Same line, ten prices: how to line shop NFL player props

Two people bet the same player over the same line on the same Sunday. Same result. One of them got paid more. The only difference: one of them checked the price first.

That's line shopping, and for player props it's one of the simplest habits that helps you make more informed decisions. This guide covers what it is, why prop prices drift apart between books, and how to do it without spending your whole Sunday morning on it.

What "the line" and "the price" are

A player prop has two parts.

Most people compare lines. Fewer compare prices. But two books can post the exact same line at different prices, and over a season those small gaps add up.

Every price also implies a probability, the break-even rate the price assumes:

The lower the implied probability for the same outcome, the better the price for you.

Why prices differ between books

Sportsbooks don't share one price feed. Each one sets and moves its own numbers based on its own customers, its own risk and how fast it reacts to news. Props move more than spreads because:

Example (illustration only, not real odds): over 64.5 receiving yards

BookPriceImplied probability
Book A-12555.6%
Book B-11553.5%
Book C-10551.2%

Same player, same line, same game. If the over hits, Book C pays the most. If it misses, the result is the same everywhere. That's the case for shopping: the outcome doesn't change, but what you're paid for it can.

Same line vs. different lines

Sometimes the books post different lines, like 63.5 at one and 65.5 at another. Comparing those is trickier, because a better line usually comes with a worse price. A fair way to compare is to look at the same line first, then decide whether a different line at a different price is worth it to you. Our Game Simulations show each player's low, typical and high range next to the book's line, which helps with that call.

How often does another book pay more?

More often than most people expect. In our Line Shop pull on Thu Oct 8, 11:48 PM ET, another licensed book paid more than FanDuel on 67% of 1,072 lines. That number moves every pull, so we time-stamp it.

A line-shopping routine that takes five minutes

  1. Decide what you're looking at first, before you look at prices. Prices shouldn't pick the bet for you.
  2. Check the same line at every book you can legally use in your state.
  3. Note the best price and the gap. A gap of 10 to 20 cents (like -125 vs -105) is common on props.
  4. Check the news. If one book is way off the others, there may be an injury or role change the others haven't priced in. Our Injury Watch and What Changed tools flag those.
  5. Keep a record. Write down the price you took. Over a season, you'll see what shopping actually did for you.

What line shopping won't do

It won't turn a bad bet into a good one, and no pick is guaranteed. A better price lowers the bar a bet has to clear. It doesn't make the bet hit. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and only where sports wagering is legal for you.
